AFNIC makes an initial assessment two months on from the EPP launch

Published in: general - naming -

As part of its aim to constantly simplify and streamline procedures, AFNIC implemented a new operational interface on 30 March 2009 for its registrars, accompanied by new administrative and technical rules.

A look back at the first two months post-launch.

EPP successfully introduced

The new registration system based on the EPP protocol (Extensible Provisioning Protocol, a standardised protocol for communication between registries and registrars), was launched on schedule after 12 months in development.

AFNIC's teams cut over to the new registration system in eight hours.
Migration did not run into any major problems, and one registrar registered the first domain name in EPP just minutes after the system came online.

AFNIC has endeavoured to minimise the impact of the EPP system on those registrars not wishing to use it upon the 30 March launch. The e-mail and web-based registration interfaces have been maintained and updated to incorporate the new administrative and technical procedures.

Key figures

Two months on from the launch date:

  • 24 registrars are already using EPP. Over 60 other registrars are currently migrating to the new system;

  • Approximately 38,000 domains have been created via EPP and over 200,000 updates made. AFNIC receives an average of 200,000 queries every day on its EPP production server, with a monthly total of 6 million queries;

  • EPP now represents 62% of all queries and 40% of new registrations.
    As a whole, 87% of operations are now performed using one of the new interfaces provided by AFNIC.

Acknowledgements

AFNIC would like to express its sincere gratitude to all registrars that lent and continue to lend their support to the development of EPP and the other components in the registration system for .fr and .re domain names. Their involvement played a key role in the success of the new system.
